Foxtrot - a stroll on the dancefloor

Picture
Let's blow some old ideas out of the water!
Foxtrot can conjure up images of Frank Sinatra , Grandma & Grandpa on the dance floor and
the judges of Dancing with the Stars saying it's the hardest dance to learn.

If you can walk, you can social Foxtrot... sounds easy! It is literally a stroll around the dance floor.
The music says let's move, make the pace casual and get an upbeat spring in your step.
And the biggest surprise of all is the number of today's songs that work for this dance.

The music and where can I dance Foxtrot?

Some say that you can only dance it to old time music - rubbish!
Foxtrot can be danced to Amy Winehouse, Gabriella Cilmi , Robbie Williams. If rock is more your style
than pop,
it works to Queen, The Beatles, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Clash.  You get the idea.
It's so versatile it can be danced to Modern, Jazz, Blues, Crooner,
Swing and the list goes on, as long as it has a 4/4 beat.

Dance it anywhere, big ballroom, small pub, back patio, lounge room,
give it a try!

What should Foxtrot feel like to dance?

You can play with the mood of the Foxtrot to suit where you are and who you are dancing with.
Make it romantic and feel the oneness of moving with someone special.
Or change it up to sassy to have some fun with a friend.
It can be a classy or relaxed social dance when dancing with the boss or the in-laws but
it's always about enjoying the beat and nice casual movement.

The Foxtrot for experienced dancers

The technical bits:

Foxtrot is a moving dance which ideally progresses constantly around the dance floor.
It involves driving steps and brushing for balance.
At its most stylish, it involves pivots and oversways (or dips) and contra body movement (strong shoulder movement).
The timing is usually described in slows and quicks and requires
sway and rise and fall to dance like an expert.

Foxtrot originated in Vaudeville where the "slow" step was first thought to have used. A Mr Harry Fox trotted around a stage with  members of dancing group, thus the name Foxtrot. During the Ragtime era around 1912 partners started dancing closer together and ad-libbing to the music. As music changed over the decades the music's characteristics determine the style in which the Foxtrot is danced from smooth and flowing to happy go lucky trotting action.
